אני מצטער שההודעה הזו באה קצת באיחור, אבל אני אכן מוצא את העניין חשוב ביותר.

William (Bill) Vacchiano, חצוצרן ומורה אגדי נפטר לפני כשבועיים בגיל 93 (19 בספטמבר, 2005, יום שני) מסיבות טבעיות בבית החולים קבּריני במנהטן.
וויליאם ווקהיאנו הצטרף כחצוצרן לפילהרמונית של ניו-יורק ב1935 וב1942 הפך להיות לחצוצרן הראשון בתזמורת וניגן שם 38 שנים.
מורה ופדגוג אהוב. לימד בג'וליארד והרבה מן החצוצרנים הטובים ביותר בעולם כיום ובעבר היו בין תלמידיו: ווינטון מרסליס, מיילס דיוויס, מרסר אלינגטון, ג'ררד שוורץ, פיליפּ סמית', ג'ון נלסון, מני לוריאנו, צ'רלי שלואטר ועוד יותר מ250 אחרים. התלמידים שלו ניגנו כמעט בכל תזמורת גדולה בארה"ב.

נולד ב23 במאי, 1912 בפורטלנד, מיין. התחיל את לימודי החצוצרה בגיל 12 והיה נגן מספיק טוב בגיל 14 בכדי להצטרף לתזמורת הסימפונית של פורטלנד. עשה את התואר הראשון שלו בג'וליארד בין השנים 1931-1934 ואת התואר השני גם כן בג'וליארד בין השנים 1934-1935 בעודו לומד אצל חצוצרן בפילהרמונית של ניו-יורק וגם כן מורה אגדי, מקס שלוסברג. ווקהיאנו הצטרף לפילהרמונית של ניו-יורק מייד אחרי שהתקבל ללימודים בג'וליארד.

לווקהיאנו הוצעו חוזים גם לפילהרמונית של ניו-יורק וגם למטרופוליטן אופרה באותו היום, בעוד הוא נבחן לשתיהן, ב1935. בסוף בחר לנגן בפילהרמונית של ניו-יורק. הוא לעולם לא פספס קונצרט אחד בתזמורת.
הופיע והקליט תחת שרביטם של גדולי המנצחים בעולם כמו לאונרד ברנשטיין, אנדרה קוסטלנץ, דימטרי מיטרופולוס, לאופולד סטוקובסקי, איגור סטרווינסקי, ג'ורג' זל וברונו וולטר.

עבד זמן רב כחבר בפקולטה בג'וליארד מ1935 עד 2002, והוצהר אמריטוס בפקולטה ב1998.
עבד גם ב4 בתי ספר אחרים - Columbia Teachers College, Mannes College of Music, Manhattan School of Music and Queens College. ווקהיאנו שיער שלימד כ2000 חצוצרנים בזמן הזה.
הוא גם הוציא מספר ספרי מיתודה וגם עיצב סדרת פיות משלו.

וויליאם ווקהיאנו קיבל תואר כבוד של דוקטור ב2003 בג'וליארד ובמאי השנה היה נוכח בטקס חלוקת תארים ל100 שנה לג'וליארד לקבלת מדליית 100 שנה לג'וליארד כהכרה בתרומתו למוסיקה.

* Only trumpet player ever to win an audition for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic in the same day (1934)
* Hired by Toscanini to join NYP
* Never missed a concert in which he was scheduled to play in 38 years with the New York Philharmonic
* At the time of his retirement in 1973, he was the longest continuous principal trumpet player in America (31 years)
