סער ודחף
תנועה ספרותית מסוף המאה ה-18 ששמה דגש על הבעת רגשות והתפרצותן, שינויי מצבי רוח קיצוניים בעזרת אלמנטים שונים, דבר שלא היה מקובל עד אז. תנועה זו השפיע גם על המוזיקה של המאה ה-18, והיא באה לידי ביטוי בדרמטיזציה הרמונית פתאומית, תזמור המכוון למטרות אלו וכד’. את השפעותיה הראשונות ניתן לראות אף אצל מלחיני הרוקוקו המעודנים. אם ניקח לדוגמא את המוסיקה של ק.פ.ע. באך נוכל לראות שם מהלכים אינהרמוניים וכרומטיים רבים, מעברים חדים מפורטה לפיאנו, תזמור שבו לפתע מופיעה אוניסונו של התזמורת כולה היוצר תחושת דרמה, פרקים שלעיתים כולם בעלי אווירה סוערת ומלאה בדחף ותנועה שלעיתים יוצרים תחושה של סערה משתוללת ממש. השפעות התנועה הזו גם באו לידי ביטוי אצל מלחיני הקלאסיקה הגדולים, אך במידה פחותה. אצל בטהובן, ממבשרי הרומנטיקה מורגשים מאוד המאפיינים אלו, וכך הם גם מופיעים אצל מלחיני המאה ה-19.
חשוב לציין שלעיתים מכונה התופעה האומנותית הזו גם “הסער והפרץ” ובגרמנית - Sturm und Drang
